If Instagram is recommending posts and reels that no longer match your interests, you can reset its recommendations by going to Profile → three-line menu → Content preferences → Reset suggested content. This affects recommended content in your feed and Explore, but does not change the accounts you follow or the ads you receive.

You can reset recommendations in the Instagram app for Android, iPhone or iPad, but not on a computer, and the reset cannot be undone. If you only want to fine-tune a few suggestions, you can also adjust your interests without a full reset.

How to reset Instagram recommendations

  1. Open your profile by tapping your photo in the bottom-right corner, then open the three-line menu.
  2. Look for Content preferences in the section dedicated to what you see.
  3. Select Reset suggested content and read the explanation before tapping Next.
  4. Before continuing, you can review the accounts you follow and unfollow any that no longer interest you. You can also manage ad topics.
  5. Tap Reset suggested content, then tap it again when asked to confirm.

Reviewing the accounts you follow is useful because they also influence your suggestions: continuing to follow accounts that no longer match your interests can steer recommendations back towards those same topics. Managing ad topics, however, is a separate setting; resetting recommendations does not change your ads on its own.

When you return to your feed, you may see less relevant content or a less personalised selection. This does not mean the process has failed; Instagram simply needs new signals to tailor its suggestions. Your subsequent interactions will help shape its recommendations.

Adjust your interests without starting from scratch

Within Content preferences, the Your algorithm section lets you review an AI-generated summary of the interests Instagram associates with you and edit the corresponding topic lists.

In the list of topics you want to see more of, you can remove an interest, move it to the selection of topics you would prefer to see less of, or add another using a keyword. The list of topics you want to see less of lets you directly flag subjects you are not interested in. This allows you to steer suggestions in a different direction without discarding all the personalisation built up so far.

You also have controls for limiting specific types of content:

  • Sensitive content: controls how often you see potentially upsetting, violent or sexually suggestive posts, among others, even if they do not violate the Community Guidelines.
  • Political content: lets you adjust recommendations for this type of content from accounts you do not follow.
  • Words, phrases or hashtags: lets you hide suggested posts containing terms you specify. Open the relevant section, add your terms and save the changes; if you enter several, you can separate them with commas.

What to do next to improve your feed

In a suggested post’s options, you can select Interested or Not interested; the latter also hides the post from your feed. If you make a mistake, you can review the lists for both responses in Content preferences and remove posts from them.

Likes, comments, shares and saves also act as signals of interest. Saving a post is a particularly strong indication that you want to see similar content, so it is worth reserving these interactions for things you genuinely like.

Searching for topics, keywords and hashtags helps shape recommendations, as does visiting the profiles of creators whose content interests you and following accounts that reflect your current tastes. Even opening a reel in full screen and turning on the sound can signal an interest in that type of video.

If you need to temporarily reduce suggestions, you can snooze suggested posts in your feed for 30 days from Content preferences. During that time, you can focus your interactions on the accounts you follow and the content that genuinely interests you in Explore.
