If your posts are barely reaching new people, start by checking that your profile is public, reviewing Account Status and allowing others to share your content. These settings open up ways for your content to spread or help you identify restrictions; none guarantees more views on its own.
Check your account, restrictions and media quality
Start by checking that your profile is public if you want to reach users who do not follow you yet. That decision means anyone can see your posts, so it also changes how widely your content is exposed. If you prefer to keep your profile private, that limitation is part of the choice.
Another priority is Account Status, available in your profile’s ☰ menu. Check for any notices or issues that could affect visibility, and open each one to review the problem and your options for resolving it. Before experimenting with formats, it is worth finding out whether any restrictions are in place.
Next, consider switching to a professional account from your profile menu by going to Account type and tools → Switch to professional account. Its most useful benefit is access to post and audience insights, alongside advertising options. These metrics let you track how people respond to your content; switching should not be mistaken for a guarantee of greater reach.
Finally, go to the media quality section and enable uploads at the highest quality. Use the highest-quality original files available, avoiding blurry, pixelated or heavily compressed versions. This setting helps keep your content looking its best, but it is no substitute for good content.

Make your posts easier to share and discover
From your profile’s ☰ menu, go to Sharing and reuse. Review these permissions together, as they determine what other people can do with your content:
- Story sharing: lets other users share your stories.
- Posts and Reels in stories: makes it easier for others to share your posts to their own stories.
- Reposts: enables others to repost your posts and Reels.
- Reuse and Remix: lets others create content based on yours.
The fewer barriers you put in the way of sharing, the more ways you leave open for your content to spread, provided they fit with the level of control you want to retain. Also review Tags and mentions: allowing mentions from anyone makes it easier for other accounts to include you in their conversations, but also opens that possibility to people beyond your followers.
There are two other ways for people to discover your content outside the app. Under Account privacy, you can review the permission for public photos and videos to appear in search engine results; under Sharing and reuse, the website embedding option allows your content to be displayed on web pages and blogs. These are additional discovery channels, not promises that you will automatically appear on Google.
On Instagram for desktop, you can also review and enable the option to show account suggestions on profiles. This relates to discovering similar profiles, but it does not guarantee that yours will be recommended to more people.
If you post Reels with speech and want to reach an international audience, check whether the translation option appears before sharing them, and select the available languages that interest you. The feature may not be offered for videos without spoken words, so it should not be treated as a universal setting.
Post thoughtfully and avoid false shortcuts
Once you have reviewed your settings, the focus shifts to content. In advice shared by wikiHow, social media specialist Alex Norimaki recommends maintaining a recognisable theme and posting consistently, so that followers find what they expected. This does not mean repeating the same thing every time, but rather avoiding constant changes of direction with no clear connection.
Include words related to your topic in your bio and post captions, along with relevant hashtags. Looking at profiles and pages in your sector can help you identify that vocabulary, without turning every caption into a list of terms aimed solely at the algorithm.
Norimaki also advises prioritising Reels to expand your reach, although images still feature in Explore. Adding music to image posts can open up another way for people to discover them through the audio used.
Conversation rounds out this strategy: Norimaki recommends replying to comments within the first 24 hours. You can ask questions or invite people to share experiences related to the post. Collaborations also allow a video to appear on the participating profiles and reach their audiences, without automatically doubling its views.
It is worth distinguishing these measures from supposed tricks: the sensitive content filter controls what you see, and there is no confirmation that changing it helps your posts reach more people.
