Instagram has its own way of sharing content on the app’s main feed: reposts. When someone reposts one of your reels or posts, it appears to their followers in their feed; but what if you want no one to repost your photos, videos or reels? Fortunately, in Instagram settings you can disable that 🔁 button on your posts so it won’t appear to anyone and your posts cannot be reposted.

The repost feature is enabled by default on all public (and professional) accounts, so if you prefer to disable it, in the following lines we show you how to do it.

This is how you can disable the repost option in Instagram settings

  1. Open your Instagram profile and tap the three-lines icon.
  2. This will take you to Instagram settings, scroll down to the Share and reuse section.
  3. Find the option Allow people to repost my posts and reels and turn off the toggle.

From that moment on, the 🔁 icon will not appear on your posts, making it impossible to repost your photos, videos, reels and posts in general. That said, you will still be able to repost content from others and even your own posts.

It is worth noting that on that same Share and reuse screen, you can find options that may interest you such as disabling/enabling that your posts or reels can be used as a basis to create other content.

Another way to disable reposting your content is to set your account to private. Posts from private accounts are only shown to followers, preventing others from accessing them, so reposting is disabled by default. If you already had your account set to private, it will not be necessary to follow the previous steps (unless you switch between public and private regularly and prefer to make sure your posts can never be reposted). Keep in mind that professional accounts cannot be set to private, so your only option will be to disable reposting of posts in the settings, as we explained above.

And if at any time you want to allow your content to be reposted, simply follow the same process and this time enable the option Allow people to repost my posts and reels.

Keep in mind that when one of your pieces of content is reposted, it always appears in your name, so no one would be “stealing” your posts and the audience could reach your profile as they normally would (unlike other darker methods, such as taking a screenshot or downloading your reel and then re-uploading the content manually). You would reach new audiences without affecting the performance and statistics of your content, something that, if you are a content creator, would make it advisable not to disable. However, if for any reason you prefer to disable reposting your content on Instagram, you’ve already seen how to do it in the lines above.
