In recent years, Instagram has been more focused on bringing new features to reels and Stories than to regular posts. However, the popular social network not only relies on its algorithm to keep you endlessly scrolling through your feed with recommended accounts, but now some of that “other people’s” content you will see thanks to the people you follow. And Instagram has launched the “repost” feature, an option that lets you share the photos and videos you like most and that will appear in your feed as content you have reposted; practically the same formula as Twitter retweets (or X reposts, if you prefer to call it).
Until now, if we wanted to share a post we liked, we could do so via Stories. With this functionality, we’ll have a new section on our profile where all the reposts we’ve made will be present (so they don’t mix with the photos/videos we’ve posted firsthand).
Instagram now has its own “retweets” with the “repost” feature
Thus, this other way of sharing content on the social network integrates with posts and reels so you can share them in a way that your friends and followers can access them through you.
When you repost someone else’s post, it will appear in your followers’ feeds alongside your profile picture so they know who reposted that content. As we said at the beginning, it works very similarly to Twitter/X retweets/reposts, if you’re familiar with that social network.
To repost content on Instagram, just follow these steps:
- Open the Instagram app.
- Go to any post (it must be public).
- Tap the icon 🔁 that will appear alongside like, comment and share.
- The post will be reposted and your followers will see it.
It is worth noting that you can only repost public content: that is, from accounts set to public. You also cannot repost posts specifically published only visible to Close Friends. And you can also turn off reposting of your content in your account settings.
A dedicated section for Instagram “retweets” on your profile
Once you’ve reposted a post, they will occupy a special section of your profile; this is something a bit different from Twitter retweets, since on Instagram, reposts have their own dedicated space and don’t mix with your personal posts. Specifically, when you go to your profile, you’ll see a section with the icon 🔁 between your reels and tagged photos.
All that said, it’s possible that your feed may now contain more reposted content than original content, on top of the huge amount of algorithm-suggested posts. This might also open the door for other “content creators” to have no excuse when they “steal” posts from others instead of reposting them (although we all know the latter will still happen).
