To hide your phone number on Telegram, go to Settings, open Privacy and Security, and then Phone Number; from there, you can select Nobody to restrict its visibility. It is also worth checking who can find you using that number, because showing a detail on your profile and allowing someone to use it to locate you are two separate controls.

Telegram also offers two related options: deleting synced contacts and changing the phone number linked to your account. They do not serve exactly the same purpose, and you do not need to apply all of them to get started. The key is to understand what you want to protect, without confusing a privacy setting with a form of total invisibility. If you also use WhatsApp, the logic is similar: review the key privacy settings before taking anything for granted.

How to hide your phone number on Telegram

The main setting is inside the privacy configuration, so you do not need to switch accounts to change it. Open Settings and then Privacy and Security, go to Phone Number, and look for the section that determines who can see it.

Select Nobody under “Who can see my phone number?”. This is the control designed to hide your phone number on your profile, but you should not leave the menu just yet: there is another related option that answers a different question.

Under “Who can find me by my number?”, choose My Contacts to limit that search route. There is no option equivalent to Nobody here, so both sections do not offer the same level of restriction. What would be the point of only reviewing what your profile displays if you leave unchecked how people can find you?

If a confirmation icon appears in the top-right corner, tap it to save the changes. What matters is checking both preferences, without assuming that hiding your phone number automatically changes every other way of finding your account.

There is also one limitation worth keeping in mind: hiding your number from other users does not hide it from Telegram. The service still has access to the phone number linked to the account, account information, and your IP address. This setting affects privacy in relation to other users; it does not delete the data handled by the platform. The settings panel still does not include a “disappear from the Internet” button. The distinction between visibility and permissions also exists in other systems, for example when managing camera permissions in Windows.

Review and delete synced contacts

The next point concerns the address book you have shared with Telegram. If you want to review this part of your privacy, you can turn off syncing and delete the contacts that have already been uploaded. These are two complementary actions: stopping sync does not replace deleting the stored information.

Start again in Settings and go to Privacy and Security. On iPhone and iPad, then open Data Settings to find the contacts controls; on Android, look for the contacts section within the settings.

First turn off Sync Contacts and then tap Delete Synced Contacts. Telegram will show a confirmation window, where you will need to accept the deletion. The process affects the contacts stored on the service’s servers, which is the information you are acting on from this menu.

The order makes sense: first you stop syncing, then you remove what had already been shared. If you turn it back on, the contact list will be uploaded to Telegram’s servers again.

This review complements the phone number controls, but it should not be confused with changing your account number. One option manages synced address book data, while the other changes the phone identifier linked to the service.

Change the linked number and understand the limits

If your goal is not only to hide your phone number, but to stop using that number on your Telegram account, you can replace it with another one. You will need access to the new number to complete verification, so it is not enough to type in a different number and close the settings.

On Android, go to Settings and open the account section; on iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap Edit. Tap your current number and select Change Number, confirming the action when the app asks you to.

Enter the new phone number and continue using the corresponding button or arrow icon. Before accepting, check that the digits are correct; you will then receive an SMS with a verification code that you must enter in Telegram to complete the change.

This alternative addresses a different need from the first one: it replaces the linked phone number, but it does not turn the account into a numberless account. Telegram requires a phone number to sign up, so hiding it, replacing it, and doing without it are not equivalent actions.

The rest of your profile matters too. If you want to reduce the amount of personal information you share, avoid including identifying details and consider whether you want to use your real name or a recognisable photo. Hiding your phone number while your profile offers other clues leaves part of the job unfinished.

Finally, do not confuse these settings with conversation protection: secret chats use end-to-end encryption, which is different from number visibility. To begin with, prioritise the phone number controls; then review syncing, and save changing your number for when you truly want to replace the one linked to your account.
