If Norton shows an error when you try to uninstall it, or you suspect it has left files behind on your computer, the solution is to use the right tool: Norton 360 Remover on Windows 10 and 11, or Norton Uninstaller on Mac. On Windows, there is also an alternative using Revo Uninstaller, although it is best reserved for cases where the official method does not fix the problem.
There is also one detail worth keeping in mind from the outset: removing the antivirus does not cancel your subscription renewal. They are two separate tasks, even if it might seem logical to say goodbye to both with a single click.
Uninstall Norton on Windows with the official tool
The first option for removing Norton on Windows 10 and Windows 11 is to download Norton 360 Remover from Norton’s website. Although you can try to uninstall it from the system’s list of programs, that process may fail or leave components behind, so the manufacturer’s utility is the recommended starting point.
Save the download in an easy-to-find location, such as the desktop or the Downloads folder, and double-click the file norton_360_remover.exe, which is identified by Norton’s yellow icon. The application may take a few seconds to load before displaying its controls.
When it opens, click Remove, the yellow button below the trash can icon, and then confirm with Uninstall. There is a small timer here that is worth noting: you have 60 seconds to decide; if that time runs out, the operation is cancelled. You do not need to download anything again — just click Remove once more and confirm within the time limit.
Once the uninstallation is complete, select Done to close the tool. You can then also delete the Norton 360 Remover file, since it has already done its job.
What you should avoid is trying to finish the cleanup by manually deleting folders or editing the Windows Registry. Files may remain in hidden locations and broken references can be left behind, so switching into fearless administrator mode is not the best shortcut in this case.
After removing Norton, you can also check that Windows Security is enabled if you plan to use the system’s built-in protection.
Use Revo Uninstaller if Norton refuses to be removed
If the official utility does not solve the issue, Revo Uninstaller Free offers a second route on Windows 10 and 11, with one stage for uninstalling and another for searching for leftovers. The free version is enough for this process; you do not need to buy the Pro edition.
From Revo’s download page, you can choose between the installable and portable editions. The first requires running its installer, while the second is used by extracting the downloaded folder and opening the executable from File Explorer.
Open Revo and find your Norton product in the list. If there are many applications, use the search box at the top or click the applications header to sort them alphabetically. Right-click Norton and select Uninstall. When several Norton products are stored in the same location, Revo will warn you that it may find shared leftovers: click Yes to continue; in all other cases, use Continue and accept the confirmations that appear.
After the uninstallation comes the part that sets this method apart: the scan for leftover files and Registry keys. What is the point of considering the process finished if what you wanted was precisely to check what had been left behind? Revo lets you choose between Safe, which is faster and more limited; Advanced, which is more thorough and slower; and Moderate, which sits somewhere in between.
Select the mode you want and click Scan. If leftovers appear, tick the boxes for the items you want to remove, click Delete and confirm with Yes, repeating the operation with the detected files and keys. If you have several Norton products installed, repeat the process for each one: removing one does not replace uninstalling the others.
Remove Norton on Mac and cancel renewal
On Mac, the procedure described uses Norton Uninstaller. Open the Go menu, go to Applications and look for the Norton uninstaller; then double-click it to run it and click Continue when its window appears.
The tool will ask for a username and password to authorise the operation. If your account is not an administrator account, you will need the credentials of a Mac administrator. Enter them and click Install Helper so the uninstaller can continue removing Norton.
The process may take a few moments or ask for the credentials again; if it does, enter them once more. When it finishes, click Finish. This is the route using the dedicated Mac uninstaller, without relying on the Windows tools mentioned earlier.
The subscription still has to be managed separately, independently of the operating system and the method used. To cancel its renewal, sign in to your Norton account on the website, go to your account section and open My Subscriptions. Select the relevant subscription and use the option to cancel renewal, identified in the English interface as Cancel Subscription Renewal.
The distinction is simple: the uninstaller acts on the software installed on the computer, while renewal is managed through your account. If Norton continues to cause problems even after using the appropriate method, the next step is to contact Norton customer support, rather than improvising a manual system cleanup.
