If you are comparing Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro, the most useful answer starts by clearing up a common assumption: paying for Pro will not make your computer faster or improve gaming performance. Both editions share the core experience, while the extra cost unlocks administration, remote access, encryption and virtualization tools.

For browsing, gaming, streaming, light photo and video editing, or adjusting basic settings such as the screen timeout, Home covers the usual needs. Pro starts to make sense when you need specific features or have to connect the device to a managed business environment. Why pay for a toolbox you are never going to open?

What Windows 11 Home and Pro have in common

The most visible Windows 11 features are available in both editions: Copilot, Snap Layouts, File Explorer tabs, live captions, native passkey support and the widgets panel. In other words, your choice does not determine whether you get a more complete interface for everyday tasks.

The same applies to gaming, because Auto HDR and DirectStorage are available in both Home and Pro. The professional label is not some secret setting that unlocks more frames per second, even if the name may suggest it. Nor does it provide a performance advantage when starting up the system or moving around the desktop.

There is, however, a difference in supported memory: Home allows up to 128 GB of RAM, while Pro reaches 2 TB. That is a considerable jump on paper, although its usefulness is mainly limited to systems running specialized workloads, such as multiple virtual machines or advanced 3D rendering, not the typical personal laptop. If you need to check this on your own device, you can view your PC specifications in Windows before deciding.

This also clears up a common misconception about remote work: using your computer for work does not automatically make Pro a necessary purchase. If your company does not require the device to be integrated into its infrastructure and you do not need the exclusive features either, Home delivers the same day-to-day experience. The decision depends on the device requirements, not the job title in your email signature.

The Pro features that justify the upgrade

Remote access is one of the most practical differences. Home can connect to other computers via Remote Desktop, but only Pro can act as a host for incoming connections using this feature. If you need to access that PC from outside through Microsoft’s tool, the distinction is decisive; it does not mean Home lacks every remote access alternative.

For experimenting with other systems or testing applications, Pro includes Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox. The first lets you run virtual machines, including Linux ones, while the second creates an isolated, disposable Windows environment for testing unknown software without directly exposing the main installation. It is the equivalent of having a small lab you can discard when you are done.

On security, it is worth avoiding another shortcut: Home does not mean there is no encryption. It includes device encryption linked to a Microsoft account, while Pro offers more complete management through BitLocker, with options to choose encryption methods, automate tasks with PowerShell and manage recovery keys within an organization. Other privacy settings, such as camera permissions in Windows, are managed separately from this difference between editions.

Business integration rounds out the main set of differences. Pro lets you join the computer to an Active Directory domain or Microsoft Entra ID and offers broader management options through Intune. These capabilities help IT teams manage identities, enforce security measures or remotely wipe a lost laptop.

For a small business with several devices, that centralized management matters more than any visual difference. Options such as deferring updates or having a private app catalog also come into play, although they are far less relevant for someone who only manages their own personal computer.

Price and purchase: when to choose each edition

The cost changes depending on how you buy Windows. As a reference, the prices cited by the source are €145 ($139.99) for Home and €259 ($199.99) for Pro. These prices may change over time or with temporary offers: before buying, check the current price on Microsoft and the edition included.

Upgrading an existing Home installation to Pro follows a different price. The source places that upgrade at €100 ($99.99) through the Microsoft Store. The process lets you keep files, apps and accounts without reinstalling the system, so starting with Home does not force you to rebuild the PC if professional needs appear later.

If you are coming from Windows 10, a compatible device with an eligible license can upgrade to Windows 11 for free. That does not mean you get Pro for free from Home: you need to check both the hardware requirements and the corresponding edition.

The choice is fairly clear: Home for typical personal use; Pro when you need to host Remote Desktop sessions, manage BitLocker, use Hyper-V or Sandbox, or integrate with a corporate network. Even for development, Home may be enough with third-party virtualization tools. Buy the features you actually need, not the implied promise of a label.
