Seeing how the world is, the utopia of waking up one ordinary day and finding ourselves in the middle of a zombie apocalypse no longer seems so crazy. Although it’s hard to know whether we’ll be among those who survive or among those who quickly become part of the army of the living dead, we can get an idea of what we’d be like if we were to turn into a zombie, and this is thanks to artificial intelligence, as has become customary. Because in recent days a new filter that analyzes the faces in the photos we use to give them that typical putrid touch of the undead has become popular.

But unlike other times, this isn’t an Instagram or Snapchat filter (which surely exist) but an independent project that stems from another very popular one: the one that turned you into a cartoon.

This is how you’d look if a zombie bit you

To turn your face into that of a zombie you just have to go to the Make Me a Zombie website and upload your photo. There’s no app to install or anything like that, everything works through the website.

To upload your photo just click Choose Picture or Browse and choose the photo you want to see with hanging flesh. Then select Make me a Zombie! for the servers to start processing the image.

That said, make sure the photo is decent, with flattering lighting and that the face is clearly visible (and preferably facing forward) so the AI can recognize it correctly and apply the necessary filters. You don’t need to crop the photo so that only your face is visible, as the website does that itself.

On the website’s front page you can see some examples of ideal photos, as well as their results, so you get an idea. Depending on the photo we’ll see some effects or others, emphasizing wounds or pale skin tones typical of these creatures, even modifying the hair so that the filter has more credibility.

If you like the result you can download the comparison between the original photo and the zombie by clicking Download or choose the montage only by clicking Show Just the Zombie.

Is it safe to convert my photo into a zombie using this website?

And what happens to your photos once you upload them? At worst we’ve learned that, if you value your privacy, these kinds of curiosities are not entirely reliable. In this case, the developers claim that the images are not stored on any server, since once the zombie filter has been processed, they are deleted. The only thing that is collected is the usual Google Analytics browsing data.

Moreover, as we can read in their questions and answers section, the website does not do business of any kind since its objective is not to make money (it doesn’t even have advertising).

If you trust their word, then it seems quite safe that there won’t be problems uploading your photos.
