I have a small problem with Google Assistant: sometimes I invoke it unintentionally. Whether the phone sometimes interprets that I pressed the button for more seconds than I actually did, or because it is accidentally activated by wireless headphones, I end up disabling Google Assistant every time I set up a new Android device.

If youre also someone who doesnt use this technology from the Mountain View company and prefer to keep the Assistant disabled, in this post we show you the steps so you never have to deal with it again.

How to disable Google Assistant so it no longer bothers you

First, open the Google app (note: dont confuse it with Chrome or any other app from the company).

Once open, tap in your profile picture to reveal several options.

Now scroll all the way down to find the Settings option.

Tap Google Assistant to enter its settings.

On the next screen, scroll almost to the end of the list to find General.

Inside General, youll see an option to disable Google Assistant. Tap the switch to turn it off.

Finally, a pop-up will appear to confirm disabling Google Assistant. Tap TURN OFF and youre all set.

From then on, you will no longer be able to invoke Google Assistant or use its various functions.

Another method to disable it on Android

There is another way to get rid of Google Assistant so it wont respond to the “Hey Google” or “Ok Google” command, although depending on the Android device you use, the steps may vary slightly. We will illustrate it using a Pixel device with stock Android, without any customization layer.

Go to the Settings on your Android phone or tablet.

Within Settings, find a section called Apps & notifications or similar.

In this section, you will need to find something like Default apps (it is likely located within a group of advanced options).

Within Default apps, you will see the apps that open for certain file types or services. The one were interested in here is Digital Assistant.

Digital Assistant again has a list of options, but well tap Default digital assistant to disable Googles assistant.

Now you just have to choose None.

You can now close Settings and return to your phone or tablets main menu. From now on, it will not respond to voice commands or when you long-press the devices home button.
