The “True Crime” genre, that is, the one that covers real criminal cases, is booming across all areas of audiovisual content. We have documentaries, films and television shows. But today we want to tell you about the best True Crime podcasts you can find on Spotify.
Why is the True Crime genre so popular?
The truth is that human beings are fascinating. How can we enjoy listening to stories of people killing other people? When you watch a movie you know the deaths aren’t real, but in True Crime podcasts the victim really existed.
There are scientific articles that address this question but I would say that what attracts listeners most is morbid curiosity and also the fact of exploring a criminal’s mind. Many people may not want to admit it but this dark and gritty aspect of crimes draws a lot of attention, and let’s not fool ourselves, morbid curiosity is part of our society.
Regarding killers, it’s undeniable that we are all interested in analyzing or understanding how a psychopath thinks or someone whom circumstances have pushed to commit a crime. Knowing what traumas or disorders they have attracts all kinds of curious people.
These are the best True Crime podcasts on Spotify
1- Criminopatía
We start strong. This is perhaps the best of all, or at least the most listened to in the newsroom. It’s hosted by Clara Tiscar and features very well-narrated crimes that are explained very clearly. We love the very detailed approach to really complex cases; if you’re the type who wants detailed information, this is your podcast.
2- True Crime con Martha Caballero
This podcast has been rising like a rocket in recent months thanks to its more approachable and, in our view, fresher style. We love the way crimes and the characters appearing in the “story” are contextualized. The truth is Martha does it really well. She also focuses on cases that may be less well known so you’ll love it. Give it a chance.
3- Terrores nocturnos
I’m sorry but I can’t handle this podcast. It scares me. That’s just it; I include it in the ranking because it’s an amazing podcast in which horror stories are discussed but also murders from real cases. It’s hosted by Emma Entrena and Silvia Ortiz and the truth is it works very, very well.
4- Sofá, manta y crimen
Of the entire ranking of the best True Crime podcasts this is the one with the most familiar style. From the name you can get an idea that it has a relaxed tone, if that’s possible within this genre, and its episodes are very entertaining. Don’t expect too many technical or dramatic details but do expect a very laid-back atmosphere. I like it a lot.
5- Crims de Carles Porta
This podcast couldn’t be missing. It’s true that it’s in Catalan and that can be a problem if you don’t speak it, but surely if you’re a fan of the genre you’ve seen the episodes of Crímenes. Here it’s a bit of the same but talking about a lot of different cases. It accumulates thousands and thousands of listens on Spotify and we recommend it 100%.
What do you think? Would you add other True Crime podcasts to this roundup? The truth is we put Spotify in the title but most of them are also available on YouTube and other platforms. Long live True Crime! (and it’s not a macabre joke).
