There are only a few weeks left to learn about the iPhone 15 and, as every year, we have a lot of rumors about what new features they will bring. Some of them have little basis, but others are an open secret. Today we want to talk about one of the latter, and it seems that the USB-C charging port will be one of Apples big new features of its devices.

Some of the new features that also seem certain are thinner bezels, a new processor and the replacement of the mute switch with a button. The new iPhone 15, the iPhone 15 PRO and the iPhone 15 PRO Max will be unveiled on September 12.

Why is Apple switching to a USB-C charging port?

We will now tell you the reason that pushed the California company to make this decision, but putting that reason aside, it is an anomaly that iPhones still use a different port than all other competing phones. It makes no sense, and Apple adopting USB-C is good news for everyone.

But the motive that prompted Apple to adopt the USB-C charging port is that the European Union is forcing all manufacturers, from 2024, to use the same port. Obviously Tim Cook and his team cannot ignore a market like Europe and must comply.

This is great news for users. First, because the days of having countless cables around the house depending on the device we want to charge will be over. And second, and more importantly, because this port is better than Lightning.

What improvements could switching from Lightning to USB-C bring?

More than it seems. The Lightning port is very slow; its charging and file transfer speeds resemble USB 2.0 and are therefore limited to, at most, 480 megabits per second. In fact, this was one of the biggest handicaps iPhones had compared to their competition.

Therefore, this change should be seen by Apple as an opportunity to fix things and make its devices even better. Adopting the USB-C charging port will, on one hand, allow charging the new iPhones at 35W, almost double what we currently have and reach dizzying file transfer speeds.

On September 12 we’ll know for sure about the iPhone 15

Let’s recap. In general terms a USB-C charging port is better than a Lightning port. It’s faster and also part of the universal chargers used by other manufacturers. What will happen with the new generation of iPhone is something that has become obvious and was necessary.

What do you think? Do you believe Apple will use this standard in its new phones? We think so. In fact, there is only one alternative, which would be no port at all and everything relying on wireless charging. Although that is very convenient, it is also very slow. Leave us your comments!
