The popular messaging app goes in streaks, and at times surprises us with a bunch of new features in a short time only to then go half a year without moving a finger. One of the latest functions it has launched are the WhatsApp Reminders, an option that sends us notifications to alert us that we have status updates and/or messages pending to read.

If you’re the kind of person who doesn’t care about all this status business, and you highly value the peace of receiving only notifications that are truly important, you can choose to disable these WhatsApp reminders, since by default they come enabled automatically.

Here’s how you can get rid of WhatsApp Reminders notifications

At the time of writing these lines, reminders are only available for the mobile version of the app, so if you use the web or desktop version, you won’t receive them there for now. However, on your smartphone you can find this functionality which, as we said, comes enabled by default after the latest WhatsApp updates.

To disable it completely, you can follow these steps:

  1. Open the WhatsApp app on your phone.
  2. Go to Settings (depends on whether you have an iPhone or an Android).
  3. Scroll down to Notifications.
  4. Among all the sections look for the one that says Reminders and turn it off.

With this, we will have ensured that the app doesn’t bombard us with notifications, reminding us that we haven’t seen Paco the gas guy’s last story status — the one time he came to check the boiler at home. Although it’s true that WhatsApp has been careful about the frequency with which these alerts are sent, some of us prefer to disable them completely.

WhatsApp sends you these notifications based on your activity with your contacts

More specifically, WhatsApp calculates the people we interact with the most (we see their statuses, those we talk to most frequently…) and based on this, decides to send us reminder notifications. So, in principle, we shouldn’t receive alerts from people who don’t interest us — even if we left the mentioned feature enabled.

And obviously, even if you disable it, you’ll continue to receive the usual notifications you had previously enabled, as before (which, in fact, in the Notifications menu itself you can use to review and toggle to your liking).

And if by any chance you decide to reactivate reminders, simply follow the same steps described above, but enabling the option in the final step. If in the future they allow us to enable and disable this feature discriminating by type of reminder (messages, statuses…) then it could be useful for those forgetful users who don’t want to know anything about statuses, but do want those messages they forgot to reply to.
