How to open and configure network adapter options in Windows

Network adapter options bring together much of Windows’ Internet configuration. From there, you can enable or disable a network card, change the IP address, configure DNS servers, adjust the priority between Wi-Fi and Ethernet, or access advanced settings for wireless hardware. The problem is that Microsoft spreads these functions across Settings, Control Panel, and Device Manager, so it is not always obvious where each one is.

The key is knowing what you want to change before you start clicking around as if you were disarming a nuclear alarm. To enable or disable an adapter, diagnose problems, or adjust IP and DNS settings, Control Panel is still the most direct route. To squeeze more performance out of Wi-Fi, check wireless modes, or change parameters such as the preferred band, you need to go through Device Manager.

Where to find adapter options in Windows

In Windows 11, you can access them from Settings by pressing Windows + I, going to Network & Internet, and scrolling down to Advanced network settings. From there, you will see the available adapters and can expand each one to view additional properties or open more adapter options. It is a modern and fairly visual route, although not always the fastest.

For Windows 10 and Windows 11, the most practical method is still the classic Control Panel, that survivor Microsoft has not quite retired because, for certain tasks, it still works better than many newer screens. Just open Control Panel, go to Network and Sharing Center, and click Change adapter settings. A window will appear with your network connections, both wired and wireless.

If you want to go straight there, there is a very geeky and highly effective shortcut: press Windows + R, type ncpa.cpl, and confirm with Enter. That command opens the adapter window directly, with no detours or intermediate menus. Why navigate through five screens when Windows still keeps its console spells?

Advanced settings to improve Wi-Fi

The most technical adapter options are in Device Manager. First, it is worth identifying which wireless adapter you have installed. You can search for Wi-Fi settings in the Start menu, open the relevant settings, and go to Hardware properties. There you will see the manufacturer, such as Intel or Realtek, as well as the supported Wi-Fi protocol.

Next, right-click the Start button, open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, and find the model that matches the manufacturer you saw earlier. By double-clicking it, or right-clicking and selecting Properties, you will find the Advanced tab. Each adapter shows different parameters here, so not all names will always appear.

Among the settings that can help with slow or unstable connections is the 802.11n channel width for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, which can be left on automatic so the adapter chooses the most suitable available band. You can also enable 802.11n or 802.11ax mode, associated with Wi-Fi 6, unless a newer router causes frequent dropouts; in that case, disabling it may be more stable.

The Preferred Band setting lets you give priority to 5 GHz when the router uses the same network name for both bands, while Wireless Mode should be set to the highest available protocol. For computers that stay in one place, low roaming aggressiveness usually improves stability; if you carry your laptop from one room to another, a medium option is a better fit.

Connection priority, manual IP, and DNS

From Control Panel, you can make less flashy but very useful adjustments. Under Change adapter settings, double-clicking a connection opens a window where you can enable it, disable it, diagnose problems, or access its properties. This is especially useful when you have Ethernet and Wi-Fi active at the same time and want Windows to choose one connection before the other.

To change that priority, open the adapter properties, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), click Properties, and then Advanced. By unchecking automatic metric, you can enter a manual interface metric: the lower the number, the higher the priority for that connection. For example, you can assign a low number to the Ethernet adapter and a higher one to Wi-Fi so the cable takes precedence when both are available.

In that same TCP/IPv4 section, you also define how Windows obtains the IP address and DNS servers. The usual choice is to leave it automatic, but if you need a specific IP address or DNS server, you can choose manual configuration and enter the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and corresponding DNS servers. If you are not sure about those details, it is better not to improvise: one wrong number can leave you without a connection even if the router is working perfectly.

When you finish changing advanced options from Device Manager, it is a good idea to click OK, close the windows, and restart the computer so the changes are applied correctly. Before touching sensitive parameters, though, it makes sense to try the basics first: diagnose the connection, check whether the adapter is enabled, and see whether the problem affects only your PC or other devices on the network as well.
