How to tell if someone is online on Roblox

If you play Roblox often, you know lining up a session with friends can be harder than getting a rare drop on the first try. That’s why one of the most common questions is pretty straightforward: how do you check whether a user is online on Roblox and, if they aren’t, when they last connected? The platform lets you see it in a few different ways, although it all depends on one key factor: each account’s privacy settings.

On Roblox, you can check someone’s status from a browser or the mobile app, and there’s also a specific experience that shows the last known info. That said, if someone chooses to hide their status, there’s no magic way to reveal it (as much as some of us would love a “developer mode” for this).

See online status from the Roblox website

The most direct way to check if someone is playing is through the web portal. Go to roblox.com from any browser on your computer and sign in to your account if you haven’t already. You may need to complete standard security checks, like a CAPTCHA or a code if you have two-step verification enabled—hardly overkill for accounts with purchases and Robux.

Once you’re in, use the search bar at the top. Type the username of the person you want to check. If you don’t remember the exact nickname, Roblox will try to show similar results, so it’s worth getting as close as possible to avoid getting lost among accounts with similar names.

When the results appear, select the People search filter (the option linked to users). On the profile page, Roblox typically shows the status as Online or Offline next to the name and avatar. You may also see a green or blue dot by the profile picture when the person is online. Here’s an important detail: if you see an orange icon, it means the user is online in Roblox Studio—in creation/development mode—rather than necessarily playing an experience.

And if you don’t want to search manually? The website also has a handy shortcut: from the recent connections section you can see people you’ve interacted with. Roblox lets you sort that list by Connections, Following or Followers, which helps you quickly find the people you’re most likely to reach.

Check if a friend is online from the mobile app

On mobile, the process is even faster—perfect for a quick check while you’re waiting for the bus or killing time between sessions. Open the Roblox app on your device and tap the search icon at the top to bring up the field where you can type the username.

Enter your friend’s nickname and run the search. If the user shows a green dot next to their name, they’re online at that moment. If the dot is orange, it’s the same idea as before: they’re on Roblox, but specifically using Roblox Studio.

Just like on the web, the app also gives you an option that doesn’t rely on memory: you can review recent connections. To see them in more detail, open the menu (the three-line icon, ☰, in the top-left corner) and go to Connections. That way you can find your contacts without having to type the exact name—exactly the kind of detail you forget when you’re in a rush.

In both cases—web and mobile—you have to accept one reality: online status isn’t always available if the user’s account has restrictive visibility settings. And that’s where many people wonder: if I can’t see anyone, is it a Roblox issue or my own settings?

Last online: chat, experiences, and privacy settings

Roblox also lets you check when someone was last online, but this depends on that person being in your connections. On the web, open the Chat section (bottom-right). In the recent contacts list, Roblox shows next to the name when the user was last online, which is useful for knowing whether it’s worth waiting or if that friend is done for the day.

There’s also a neat option for anyone who wants to go a step further without leaving the ecosystem: an experience called “Check a User’s Last Known Online Info”. You can find it by searching that name on Roblox (under experiences) or by opening its official page and hitting Play. When you start, you can choose to stay in a multiplayer version or teleport to a solo one. Then you enter the exact username and the system shows info like the avatar, the name, when they joined and when they were last online, also indicating whether they’re currently online. The same view lists social metrics like number of friends, followers, and following, and includes buttons to check other profile elements such as the description, outfits, accessories, or groups.

That said, if you find that everyone shows up as offline, Roblox has a fairly specific explanation: when you restrict your privacy so your own status isn’t shown, you may also lose the ability to see other people’s status. In other words, if you enable “ninja mode,” the system may return the favor and stop showing you everyone else’s presence too.

To adjust this, on the web sign in, open the Settings menu (gear icon in the top-right corner) and go to Settings. From there, head to Content & privacy restrictions, then Visibility & private servers and, under Visibility, find the Online Status option. There you can choose the visibility so your status is shown to Everyone or to Connections, followers, and people I follow, depending on the level of exposure you prefer.

With these tools, you’ll usually be able to find a way to check whether your friends are available to play or creating in Studio—and you’ll also understand why Roblox sometimes doesn’t show what you expect. It’s rarely a mysterious bug; it’s typically a mix of permissions and visibility, like on almost any modern social platform (yes, even the ones that love to call themselves the “metaverse”).
