Suppose you have two smartphones: one you carry with you all day and another you only use at home. Or you have a smartphone and a tablet, but in any case you don’t want to give up replying to messages that reach you at any time. That’s where you can choose to have two WhatsApp accounts (or up to four) active at the same time on your different devices.
That way, if you get a WhatsApp message and at that moment you are using your secondary smartphone (or tablet), you can reply without having to go fetch your main phone. A useful feature that until very recently wasn’t possible to do as easily as now, since the company behind WhatsApp has finally enabled it natively.
How to have two WhatsApp at once on your primary and secondary phone (or on your tablet)
Assuming you already have WhatsApp running on your usual smartphone, let’s set up the secondary device (or tablet) to complete the whole registration process so that messages also arrive on that device.
Whether your main phone is an iPhone or an Android, the process is very similar and you’ll be able to pair your devices without any major issue.
- First, you have to download WhatsApp on your secondary device where you also want to have your WhatsApp account.
- When it installs, open WhatsApp and tap Continue until you reach the screen that asks you to enter your phone number.
- Instead of entering it, tap the three-dot icon and select Link as an additional device.
A QR code will appear on the screen that you’ll need to scan from the WhatsApp app on your primary device (Settings/Linked devices/Link a device).
- The chats will begin to load on your secondary device, becoming a “mirror” of your primary WhatsApp.
From that moment on, your messages will arrive on both devices. That’s how you can have two WhatsApp at the same time without any hassle!
But what I want is to have two accounts on the same device!
If, on the other hand, what you’re looking for is to have two different WhatsApp accounts on the same device, the app itself includes a multi-account system where you can register more than one phone number and receive messages from both numbers.
To add another WhatsApp account to your usual one, simply follow these steps:
- Open the WhatsApp app and from the Chats tab, tap the three-dot icon to go into Settings.
- Where your name appears, tap the (+) icon and then tap Add account.
- Register your other phone number following the on-screen instructions.
The registration process will be practically identical to the usual one and once it’s ready, you can switch between accounts in Settings.
If this option doesn’t appear, you can try to clone the WhatsApp app using functions integrated by some manufacturers. For example, the App Twin app on Huawei devices lets you duplicate an app to use it with two different numbers, or the Dual Apps feature on Xiaomi devices to achieve exactly the same result.
You can also try third-party apps such as Clone App on Android if your manufacturer doesn’t integrate this function natively.
