If you are a user of any Meta platform, that is, Instagram, Facebook, or WhatsApp, you have likely received an email in which, in short, the company informs you how it will use your public information to train its AI. However, it is possible to object to this and prevent Meta from using your posts and information to feed its artificial intelligence.

That said, by default and if you do nothing, it will use your data to improve its AI. So, if you prefer to avoid this happening, you can follow the steps we summarize below so that, to a greater or lesser extent, it carries out this training.

Meta will use your Instagram information and posts to train its AI, but you can opt out

As stated in the mentioned email:

We want you to know that, in order to provide these experiences, we will use information about interactions with AI features on Meta and public information, such as posts and comments, from accounts of people over 18 years old in accordance with our legitimate interests, for the purpose of developing and improving AI on Meta.

If you do not agree with this update, you can follow these steps from Instagram to object to their using your data to train their AI.

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile. Inside your profile, tap the three-line icon to access settings.
  2. Now scroll down until you find the Privacy Center. Tap it to enter.
  3. Inside the Privacy Center you will see text in which the word «opt out» appears highlighted with a link. Tap it.
  4. By tapping this word, a form will open in which you must enter your email (the one linked to your Instagram/Facebook/Meta account) and, optionally, a text explaining why you are objecting to Meta training its AI with your content.
  5. All that’s left is to tap Send and wait for your request to be processed.

You will receive a confirmation email indicating that your request has been submitted successfully and that the Meta team will stop using your public content to train its AI, although…

Meta may continue to use some of your data to train AI even if you have objected

Unfortunately, not everything that glitters is gold, since, as can be gleaned from Meta’s words during this process: «We may continue processing certain information about you to develop and improve AI on Meta, even if you object or do not use our products and services».

A detail that some users on X have already pointed out, and because of which Meta’s developers continue to reserve the right to use some of our data to train their AI, even after we have objected using the form described above.
